CALVARY’S STORY & MISSION
Calvary Church began as part of the Calvary Chapel movement, which has always been known for being churches that teach the Bible… chapter-by-chapter, verse-by-verse. Calvary Church has great appreciation for its Calvary Chapel roots and remains in fellowship within the Calvary Chapel movement. In 2016, Calvary Church chose to affiliate with the Southern Baptist Convention.
Pastor Dan Plourde grew up going to church, but his background was a blend of conservative Baptist, and charismatic Church of God. After college Dan attended seminary. One day, while driving back to seminary from Indianapolis, Dan picked up a radio program of someone teaching from the Bible. He was mesmerized. He had never heard the Bible taught this way. As he drove further, the signal became faint so he pulled off the interstate and parked in a mall parking lot to listen to the rest of the program. At that moment he thought, “I don’t plan on being a pastor, but if I did, that’s how I would do it.”
Many years later, Dan found himself in South Florida and he attended a Calvary Chapel for the first time. He was hooked on the bible teaching. It was then that the Holy Spirit spoke to Dan about his calling in ministry. Soon after, Dan went on staff at the church, and 2 1/2 years later God spoke to Dan and Cheryl calling them to start a church in Jupiter, FL.
That was in 1997, and from the very first day Dan’s promise was that we preach God’s Word to whoever will show up. Teaching the Word of God is central to what we do. We value many things, such as excellence, integrity, stewardship, faith, and grace… but teaching and studying God’s Word is what we have been called to do, and it is what we will continue to do until Jesus returns.
“It’s Our Mission For Everyone That Enters Through Our Doors To Experience How We Live, Love And Share His Word...Everyday. From Our Congregation And Church Ministries, To Local And Foreign Missions, God’s Blessings Allow Us To Extend Our Reach As He Prepares Us For The Future Of Calvary Church.”
— Pastor Dan Plourde
STATEMENT OF FAITH
The Scriptures
We believe that the entire Bible is the inspired Word of God and that it is without error. It is the final authority for faith and life. (2 Timothy 3:15, 2 Peter 1:20-21, Matthew 5:18, John 16:12-13)
The Trinity
We believe in one God, eternally existing in three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They are equal in power and glory. (Deuteronomy 6:4, 2 Corinthians 13:14)
Jesus Christ
We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten son, who became flesh to reveal God to man and to become the Savior of the lost world. (1 Peter 4:5, Romans 14:9, 2 Timothy 4:1)
Salvation
We believe that the blood of Jesus Christ, shed on the cross, provides the sole basis for the forgiveness of sin. Therefore, salvation occurs only when a person places his or her faith in the death and resurrection of Christ as the sufficient payment for his or her sin, and our justification is made sure by Jesus’ literal, physical resurrection from the dead.
Man
We believe that mankind was created in the image of God to have fellowship with Him but through Adam’s sin inherited a sinful nature and became alienated in that relationship. As a result, man is completely incapable of regaining a right relationship with God through his own effort. (Genesis 1:26-27, Romans 3:22-23, Romans 5:12, Ephesians 2:1-3, 12)
The Holy Spirit
We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit. He indwells Christians and enables them to live godly lives. We further believe that biblical examples of the Holy Spirit's power and gifts are available to believers today.
The Church
We believe that the church is the body of Christ, of which Jesus Christ is the head. The members of the church are those who have trusted by faith the work of Jesus Christ on the cross. We recognize believers’ baptism and communion as Scriptural means of worship in the church. (Ephesians 1:22-23, 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, 2 Corinthians 11:2, Acts 14:27, 1 Timothy 3:1-3, Matthew 28:19-20, Acts 2:41-42, Acts 18:8, 1 Corinthians 11:23-26)
Marriage, Gender, and Sexuality
We believe that God creates each person as Male and Female (as determined at birth) and that these two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God. We believe that marriage is sanctioned by God, and joins a man and a woman together in a single, exclusive, covenantal union, as outlined in Scripture. We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to only occur between a man and a woman who are married to one another. (Genesis 2:24; Romans 1:26-29; Romans 7:2; I Corinthians 7:10; Ephesians 5:22-23; I Thessalonians 4:1-8; Hebrews 13:4)
